Green Cabinetry from the Green Mountains

View of Stratton Mountain from Jamaica Joinery shop

The cabinetry I offer now is the result of many years of experimentation and refinement. It is not as green as I would like but offers eco-friendly qualities with some small compromises to make greener cabinetry affordable. My goal is a 'cradle to cradle' product (which is what historical joinery was) a product that can be recycled or composted to feed future trees rather than joining with the plastics and e-waste in a toxic landfill. Some of the earth friendly qualities are described below.

Who am I? Read here.

What makes Jamaica Joinery's cabinetry environmentally friendly?

Here are some of the features that make Jamaica Joinery unique:

1- Primary construction of solid wood frames

Most cabinetry today is formed of plywood or other sheet goods. Though these products have their advantages they all use chemicals which I don't want in my lungs or in my garden. Check out my blog for more details.

2 - Locally sourced material

When available, I use locally sourced hardwoods. Almost all are regionally sourced, resulting in less carbon pollution due to shipping.

3 - Durable components

Cabinet components other than wood, such as drawer tracks and hinges are high quality and proven to last a lifetime. Most are manufactured by Blum.

4 - Low VOC finishes

Here the preferred finish is not only ultra-low VOC but developed and manufactured here in Vermont using waste products from the dairy industry - Vermont Natural Coatings.

5 - Knockdown fasteners allow for more fuel-efficient delivery.

This is something Ikea has taught us. But the same thing can be accomplished using higher quality materials & fasteners.
